We hiked about a mile and a half from the highway over the tephra and all the different lava tubes and old stuff on the back side of Kilauea and here we are. We’ve got a whole crowd of people that are taking it in watching an epic eruption.
Kilauea episode 41 is double the crater rim (height), easily over 1000 feet at this point. We’ve had little bits of rock and tephra (volcanic debris) falling from the sky here and there. We heard that back at the highway that there were chunks that were about a foot in size that were falling on the highway so that’s why they shut off the highway. Didn’t allow anybody to drive further from the south entry towards the Hawaii volcanoes national park. But here we are we made it anyways. And this is eruption 41.
